HISTORY
1961-present
The Garnet and Gold Society was officially formed in the fall of 1961, following an initial production in the winter of 1960. The society was established to produce musical theatre on campus, a mandate that has remained central to its work, even as the nature of its productions evolved over time. After several early productions in the 1960s, the society became inactive before being reinvigorated in 1979. Since then, Garnet and Gold has continued as a student-run organization, typically involving members of both the Mount Allison University and Sackville communities on stage and behind the scenes.
The society builds on a longer tradition of musical theatre at Mount Allison that dates back to 1932, when the Mount Allison Choral Society mounted its first full-scale production of HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan under the direction of Harold Hamer.
